Neanderthal
Neanderthal Introduction
Neanderthal is a sub-species of Homo Sapien, which means ‘Wise Man’. As far back as 250 000 years ago, the first Homo Sapien existed. About 100 000 years ago, the first Neanderthal existed. The first Neanderthal existed about 100 000 years ago to 40 000 years ago. Neanderthal was named after ‘Neander Valley’ in Germany where the first remains were found. Neanderthal was the first species that lived in Ice-Age. A Neanderthal’s average living years were about forty years. Their life was very short because they suffered from cold climates and they didn’t have good medical cares. They all lived in caves.
This is an image of a Neanderthal waiting to hunt.
You can see he's wearing animal's skin to keep warm in the cold.
A female (mother) Neanderthal’s job is to take care of their kids. They stayed close to their caves and gather food for themselves. A male (father) Neanderthal’s job is to hunt. They might not be back in weeks. A kid Neanderthal’s job is to learn to survive because they always needed to survive on their own – a female Neanderthal kid needed to learn to sew from their mothers. A male Neanderthal needed to learn how to hunt from their fathers.
They were the first that had religions – believes in ‘afterlife’. They put ‘treasures’ – tools, food and flowers on the dead person who was going to be buried. They wished the person could be rich and wealthy in their afterlife.
A Neanderthal has a brain that is as large as modern humans. They had flat face. Their chins are receding and their checks are large. They had prominent brow ridge. They were shorter than Homo Erectus. They had bowed legs and large muscles. They were hunters, toolmakers and home builders.
They used group strategies to hunt massive prey. They made better tools and weapons for different tasks. They were also the first species that wear clothes – They used animal skins to wrap around their bodies.
They weren’t able to plan ahead because they had no ideas what would happened. They can’t speak very clearly. However, they were able to communicate and probably able to understand others. Their position of larynx limited ability to create speech.
Species Importance
What makes them so important to us is the fact that they are smarter than previous species. These men started to wear clothes, sew clothes, and kill bigger prey! Neanderthals did not have long life spans. Remains show that they did not live past 40, but these creatures were getting wiser, and are more human. They are important to know about, as well, because they were the last type of early man to live before the ice age, as they all became extinct. The Neanderthals made more advanced tools, for daily life. If they do not make tools, and eat more meat, we would not be as smart today. The more intelligent they got, and the more meat that they ate, the more smarter, and wiser, the modern man would be. These creatures are important to us, because they were the first to wear clothes.
Archaeological Artefact
The Neanderthals made all types of everyday tools. When they made their huts, they would use the marrow from a mammoth and sticks and rocks. They would hide out in caves were there would be a workshop, for making different things, such as hunting. These were the first species to have been able to make clothes rather than just draping and wrapping animals for warmth. They were starting to get more advanced at killing bigger species, with better tools. Some of their remains were found in Europe and Asia.
